The amplitude and phase precision of 40 Hz auditory steady-state response depend on the level of arousal. 2007 Experimental Brain Research

The 64-channel EEG data was wavelet transformed and the amplitude and phase precision of the wavelet transformed evoked potential were decomposed by the recently proposed multi-subject non-negative multi-way factorization (NMWF) (Morup et al. in J Neurosci Methods 161:361–368, 2007). The estimates of these measures were subjected to statistical analysis. The amplitude and phase precision of the ASSR were significantly larger during the low arousal state compared to the high arousal condition. The modulation of ASSR amplitude and phase precision by differences in the arousal level during recording warrants caution when investigating oscillatory brain activity and interpreting the findings of reduced ASSR in schizophrenia. It also emphasizes the necessity of standardized recording procedures and monitoring the level of arousal during ASSR testing.

ABSTRACT Importance: A major goal of translational neuroscience is to identify neural circuit abnormalities in neuropsychiatric disorders that can be studied in animal models to facilitate the development of new treatments. Oscillations in the gamma band (30-100 Hz) of the electroencephalogram have received considerable interest as the basic mechanisms underlying these oscillations are understood, and gamma abnormalities have been found in schizophrenia (SZ). Animal models of SZ based on hypofunction of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) demonstrate increased spontaneous broadband gamma power, but this phenomenon has not been identified clearly in patients with SZ.

Objective: To examine spontaneous gamma power and its relationship to evoked gamma oscillations in the auditory cortex of patients with SZ. (繼續閱讀…)

This cross-sectional study reports an increase in spontaneous EEG gamma activity during auditory steady-state stimulation in schizophrenia, reflecting a disruption in the normal balance of excitation and inhibition.
